Start bigger than feels sensible. A 20-litre tank is far harder to keep alive than a 55-litre one, because a small volume of water swings in temperature and chemistry fast and gives you no time to react. Most first tanks fail for this reason and the owner concludes they are bad at fishkeeping.

Set it up and run it empty for a week before you buy any fish. The filter needs that time to grow the bacteria that process waste. Adding fish on day one is the other reason first tanks fail.
